U4U: a members club for girls aged 11 - 18
Life of Ellie
Ellie loves being a member of U4U for
many reasons. Since joining, at age 11 . . .
She has made a bunch of new friends – with varied backgrounds from all over London
She has learned new things - like karate (which she would have otherwise not had the opportunity to try) and all about carbon footprints (a concept that she did not even know existed!)
She has learned to love working in a group. This session her team is working on a stainable fashion runway show. They are learning about the fashion industry - from a psychological and cultural perspective; sourcing goods & services; posture, posing and self confidence. They will be modeling innovative high fashions made from materials that were recovered by the girls themselves at their local landfill - while learning about fashion they also got an education in waste.
Ellie is fully integrated in the program. Mondays she has alternating peer group and mentor/team meetings; on Wednesdays she works for a U4U small enterprise - it is a visiting service for the elderly that was founded only a year ago and already serves 100 elderly people.
Ellie has a professional coach who this year is supporting her with fitness and nutrition. She has always struggled with weight - both of her parents are obese so she wants to develop healthy habits now.
When she is not at a U4U meeting or attending drop-in session, Ellie is often online writing in her U4U diary, chatting with her U4U pal in Japan or just browsing pictures and other posts of U4U friends.
Ellie’s mother, Laura and father, Ron, are pleased with U4U because they have seen ther daughter’s confidence and leadership skills develop well beyond her peers who are not involved with U4U. Laura is on the U4U Parent’s website every week - either following Sophie’s activities, getting parenting tips or exchanging advice with other parents. She has even made 3 friends through the website! Ron likes helping Ellie’s team with different components of their quarterly activities - like helping the girls build props for their upcoming runway show.
